The Sound of Time: Make West Release “The Clockmaker’s Dream

August 22nd, 2025

Make West The Clockmakers Dream Album Art.png

“The Clockmaker’s Dream” is the second release from the Make West sessions we tracked at Hughes Drive Productions’ new studio in November 2024, following the release of “Over and Over” in July 2025. These sessions marked an important creative stretch for the band, with more music from this body of work scheduled to arrive in early 2026. This track takes a different path from most of Make West’s catalog. While frontman Damien Jordan’s voice is part of the piece, there are no lyrics. Instead, his vocals become another layer of texture, letting the music itself carry the emotion and story. It is a more cinematic, instrumental approach that shows another side of what this band can do. We chose “The Clockmaker’s Dream” as a release in part because of the hypnotic, looping percussion that runs throughout the track. Nick Adams on drums and Chad on bass guitar create a steady, mechanical pulse that gives the song its name and its forward motion. I performed all of the keyboards and synth layers, and also handled the recording and mixing here at HDP, shaping the track into something immersive and constantly evolving. Two more songs were recorded during the same sessions, with additional releases already planned for early 2026, so this track sits right in the middle of a much larger story that is still unfolding. “The Clockmaker’s Dream” was mastered by Stephen Marsh of Marsh Mastering, whose legendary work and attention to detail gave the track its final depth and polish.

Make West Kicks Off a New Era with “Opening Band” at HDP

July 25th, 2025

Make West Opening Band Album Art.png

“Opening Band” was the first single to come out of the three-song Make West sessions we recorded in November 2024 at Hughes Drive Productions’ current studio. It set the tone for this new chapter of the band and laid the groundwork for the releases that followed. Damien Jordan came into the session with a clear idea. He wanted to write a song that felt like the perfect opening-set tune, something simple, musical, and effective that a band could use right out of the gate so sound engineers in a rush could get strong, usable levels quickly. That concept shaped the entire arrangement, giving the track a clean, focused structure while still leaving room for character and detail. Alongside the main version, we also released an instrumental mix of “Opening Band” for listeners who want to dig deeper and hear all of the layers without vocals out front. It offers a different perspective on the song and really lets the musicianship shine. The foundation of the track comes from Nick Adams on drums and Chad McIntyre on bass, whose locked-in groove gives the song its forward motion. The recording also features legendary steel guitarist Gary Brandin, a longtime collaborator of Damien’s. Gary’s playing adds a signature emotional voice to the track, and fans may also recognize him from his recent work on The Simpkin Project’s single “Politricks.” We also brought in UK-based guitarist Jordan Humber, who added electric guitar leads, solos, and layered textures that help thicken and elevate the track. Jordan has been part of Make West’s albums and singles for several years now, making this another example of the band’s international reach. Damien has a knack for finding great talent wherever it lives and bringing it all together into a cohesive final production. I recorded, mixed, and edited “Opening Band” here at HDP, and the track was mastered by Los Angeles–based mastering engineer Stephen Marsh of Marsh Mastering, whose legendary ears and attention to detail brought the final polish to the release. More music from these November 2024 sessions is on the way, with additional singles expected in August 2025 and early 2026, continuing to roll out this new chapter of Make West’s work.

Hughes Drive Productions Featured in KSD A-200 MK2 Recording Magazine Advertisement

May 11th, 2025

Hughes Drive Productions is proud to announce a major upgrade to the studio’s monitoring chain with the installation of KSD A-200 MK2 reference monitors. While much of the recent HDP news has focused on new music releases, this addition represents an equally important step forward on the technical side of the studio and one that is already paying off in a big way. The A-200 MK2s have brought a new level of clarity, translation, and depth to the control room. The stereo image is more precise, the low end is tighter and more articulate, and the midrange—where so many critical musical decisions live—is revealing in a way that makes it easier to hear what truly matters. Since making the switch, mixes coming out of HDP have taken a noticeable leap forward, translating better across cars, earbuds, home systems, and professional playback environments alike. Simply put, these monitors let you hear the truth, and that truth leads to better records. HDP was also recently featured in a KSD advertisement that appeared in Recording Magazine, a moment of pride for the studio and a reflection of its long-standing relationship with the professional audio community. Huge thanks go to longtime friend Alex Oana for including Hughes Drive Productions in the ad and helping shine a light on what we do here. Additional thanks to Sound Vision Works and Jeff Ehrenberg for their expertise, support, and guidance throughout the process. Their commitment to matching the right monitoring solution to the room and the workflow made all the difference. At Hughes Drive Productions, great music starts with great listening. The KSD A-200 MK2 monitors are now a core part of that philosophy, helping ensure that every mix leaving HDP reflects the full depth, impact, and emotion of the performances that go into it.

Old Friends, New Gear: Hughes Drive at the NAMM Show 2025

January 24th, 2025

I had the opportunity to attend the 2025 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, continuing a tradition that now spans decades. NAMM has always been an important space for me, not only to see what is new in audio technology, but to reconnect with the people and relationships that have shaped my work in recording and production over the years. Each year, NAMM is a chance to strengthen long-standing connections, meet new builders and designers, and spend time with friends who share a deep commitment to sound and craft. It is also one of the few places where you can speak directly with the manufacturers behind much of the equipment used daily at Hughes Drive Productions, learning firsthand about new tools, designs, and ideas that will soon find their way into studios. This year’s show included time with longtime friends and collaborators, including Luke Pimentel, the Maag family, Jeff and Navon from Providence Sound, and my friends from Wolff Audio and Z and H Designs. I also had the chance to spend time with Andrew Mybaugh of Mybaugh Microphones and Eric Heiserman of Heiserman Microphones, two builders whose work continues to set a high bar for modern microphone design. Another highlight was reconnecting with the crew from Mystery Magicians, who are creating some of the most exciting products coming out of Los Angeles right now. Their work focuses on retro-styled tube gear, including microphone preamps and direct boxes, combining classic design language with modern reliability and build quality. The show also provided an opportunity to reconnect with longtime friends including my brother Alex Oana, Dustin from Vanguard Microphones, studio legend JJ Blair, and Chris Yetter, owner of Audioscape Engineering, along with friends from Recording Studio Loser. NAMM remains a powerful reminder that recording is ultimately about people as much as it is about gear. Seeing familiar faces, sharing ideas, and experiencing new tools firsthand helps keep Hughes Drive Productions grounded in tradition while continuing to move forward. Experiences like this directly inform how I work in the studio and how I choose the tools that ultimately serve the artists who record at HDP.

From Studio to Wax: The Simpkin Project Readies Helping Hand Vinyl Release

April 11, 2025

Phil and Shawn Red Vinyl_edited.jpg

As The Simpkin Project prepares for the release of their fifth studio album, Helping Hand, Hughes Drive Productions reflects on a creative partnership that now spans more than two decades. All five Simpkin Project albums have been recorded at Hughes Drive Productions, along with over 100 songs, dubs, and singles, making the band one of the most deeply rooted and long-standing collaborations in the studio’s history. The upcoming release represents both continuity and evolution for the band. From early recordings to the present day, the process has remained centered on performance, experimentation, and trust built over years of shared work. That trust is grounded not only in music, but in friendship. The photo accompanying this release captures frontman Phil Simpkin and Shawn Taylor, longtime childhood friends, holding the limited edition Helping Hand Red Nova 180-gram vinyl, a physical symbol of a journey that began long before the first record was pressed. The limited edition Red Nova vinyl is available to order now. With approximately 100 copies available, the pressing is intended as a special collectible for dedicated Simpkin Project fans and vinyl enthusiasts looking to own a tangible piece of the band’s history. In keeping with Hughes Drive Productions’ commitment to analog-minded record making, Helping Hand continues a shift away from CD manufacturing and toward vinyl pressing. This approach reflects a broader focus on physical formats that honor dynamics, depth, and intentional listening, particularly for artists and listeners who value analog sound and long-form albums. With Helping Hand, The Simpkin Project adds another chapter to a catalog shaped entirely at Hughes Drive Productions, reinforcing a shared philosophy of collaboration, craftsmanship, and records made to last.

Damien Jordan's Make West Records New EP Sessions at Hughes Drive Productions

November 23rd, 2024

On November 23, 2025, the band Make West returned to Hughes Drive Productions to record three songs for an upcoming EP expected in 2025. The sessions mark another chapter in a decades-long collaboration between Hughes Drive Productions and Make West frontman Damien Jordan. The recordings include a reimagined version of an older Make West song alongside two brand new compositions. The three tracks recorded during the sessions are “Dark Star,” “Opening Band,” and “Clockmakers Dream.” Each song is planned for release as a standalone single across all major streaming platforms. The rhythmic foundation of the sessions was built with live drum and bass performances, featuring studio veteran Nick Adams on drums and Chad McIntyre on bass. To capture the full depth, energy, and nuance of Adams’ drum performance, Hughes Drive Productions deployed a full array of modern and vintage microphones, carefully selected and positioned to serve the character of each song. The sessions emphasized performance, feel, and collaboration, blending experienced musicianship with an intentional recording approach. These new recordings continue a creative partnership rooted in trust, shared history, and a commitment to making records that evolve while honoring their origins. Further details and release dates for the singles will be announced as the project moves toward completion.

Simpkin Project Releases First Single “Politricks” from Upcoming Album Helping Hand

October 25th, 2024

The Simpkin Project has released “Politricks,” the first single from their upcoming album Helping Hand. The track was written, recorded, and produced at Hughes Drive Productions, continuing a long-standing creative relationship between the band and the studio. “Politricks” was built from the ground up, beginning with live drum and bass performances, forming the rhythmic foundation of the song. From there, additional layers were developed to expand the traditional reggae palette, including live string arrangements and steel guitar elements, adding depth and texture while pushing the sound beyond traditional reggae instrumentation. All recording, mixing, and editing were completed by Shawn Taylor at Hughes Drive Productions. To create the larger than life group vocal sound heard in the chorus, the band made use of the natural reverberant spaces within the studio, capturing organic ambience rather than relying solely on artificial effects. The string performances feature Anne Cawley on violin and Chris McCarthy on cello, while the steel guitar was performed by studio legend Gary Brandin, adding a distinctive voice to the arrangement. The accompanying music video for “Politricks” was shot entirely in the studio using an iPhone and edited and finished by Shawn Taylor at Hughes Drive Productions, maintaining a cohesive creative approach across both audio and visual elements. Helping Hand marks The Simpkin Project’s fifth full-length album and is slated for release in April 2025. Artwork for the “Politricks” single was created by longtime friend and collaborator Curtis Bergesen of Collage the World. “Politricks” was mastered by Stephen Marsh of Marsh Mastering in Hollywood, California. The single is available now, with Helping Hand scheduled for release soon.

Make West Launches Four-Single Release Run Ahead of Upcoming Album

September 30th, 2024

Make West is in the middle of an ambitious release run, rolling out four singles in just 90 days as the first chapter of the band’s third full length album, which is scheduled to drop in spring 2026. The songs, “Civil War,” “Drums of My Days,” “Never the End Again,” and “Over and Over,” represent a focused burst of creativity built around Damien Jordan’s vision and his deeply collaborative way of making records. The project began with Damien, Nick Adams, and Chad McIntyre tracking the core performances with longtime Los Angeles recording icon Drew Allsbrook at The People’s Music Recording Studio in Van Nuys, California. From there, the sessions expanded into a broader collaborative effort, with Hughes Drive Productions serving as the central hub where everything came together. At HDP, the tracks were further developed with legendary steel guitarist Gary Brandin and UK based electric guitarist Jordan Humber, whose layered parts, solos, and textures gave the songs their depth and character. Damien also recorded portions of his acoustic guitar and vocals at his home studio and sent those performances into the HDP workflow, where all final editing, assembly, and mixing took place. This hybrid approach reflects how Damien builds Make West music by finding the right players in the right places and letting their strengths shape the final result. All four singles feature artwork by our good friend Christy Bonales, whose visual style gives the series a unified identity and helps mark this run of releases as part of a larger body of work. The four singles were mastered by our dear friend Stephen Marsh of Marsh Mastering in Hollywood, California, bringing his legendary ears and final polish to the project. Together, these four songs form the opening statement for Make West’s upcoming third album, capturing both the urgency of the moment and the long term vision behind the band’s evolving sound.

Brazil Meets HDP: Pode Conseguir - A New Take on Simpkin Project's  “Everything You Want

April 26th, 2024

I’m excited to share a new international collaboration that came together through Hughes Drive Productions between The Simpkin Project and Brazilian reggae band Mensana — their new release Mensana ft. The Simpkin Project – PODE CONSEGUIR (Everything You Want). The song is a fresh, global reimagining of “Everything You Want,” a longtime fan favorite from The Simpkin Project’s third album, which we originally recorded at HDP’s original studio back in 2012. Over the years it’s become one of those tracks that fans keep coming back to, so when Mensana discovered Simpkin Project online and reached out from Brazil, it felt like the perfect opportunity to give the song a whole new life. Mensana rebuilt the track in their own reggae-influenced style and performed it primarily in Portuguese, giving it a vibrant new cultural voice while keeping the heart of the original intact. Phil Simpkin recorded new English vocals here at HDP, singing the second verse, and I added harmony vocals that were sent to Brazil for Mensana to weave into their final production. Watching the track come together across continents was one of those moments that really reminds you how powerful modern collaboration can be. The music video captures that same spirit, featuring Phil performing here at Hughes Drive Productions’ new studio, intercut with footage of our Brazilian counterparts, visually telling the story of how this project came together. I’m proud that HDP was able to serve as the bridge for this collaboration, recording and delivering the English vocal performances that allowed Mensana to create such a fun, upbeat, and heartfelt new version of the song. PODE CONSEGUIR (Everything You Want) now stands as a true international release — rooted in our history, but carried forward by new voices and new energy.

No More Lies: The Atomic Circle Unmask “White Hat Stories

April 5th, 2024

The Atomic Circle return with “White Hat Stories,” their fifth single to date and a sharp, timely statement that blends urgency, reflection, and bite. The song explores the tension between perception and truth, questioning the narratives we are sold and the consequences of believing them for too long. “White Hat Stories” was recorded at Hear No Evil Recording Studio in Orange, California, where Elliot Keonig captured the band’s initial tracking. From there, the sessions were brought to Hughes Drive Productions, where we tracked and edited vocals and finalized the production and mix, shaping the song into its finished form. Lyrically, “White Hat Stories” digs into the idea of manufactured heroes and moral certainty. Lines like “Selling stories about white hats / Defeating those in black” and “Every hero has a color-coded tell” point to a world where good and evil are oversimplified, and where power often hides behind clean images and confident language. The repeated question “Have we reached the end of time?” feels less apocalyptic and more accusatory, asking listeners to consider how far these narratives can be pushed before accountability becomes unavoidable. As the song unfolds, the tone shifts from realization to resistance. What begins as complicity turns into confrontation, ending with a clear demand for truth and justice. “No more lies” lands not as a slogan, but as a reckoning. After mixing at HDP, the track was sent to our friend Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles, where it received its final polish and weight. “White Hat Stories” is accompanied by a powerful music video that expands on the song’s themes visually and adds another layer to the release. Together, the song and video mark a strong step forward for The Atomic Circle, reinforcing their voice and vision with clarity and purpose.

Where the Gear Meets the People: HDP on the Floor at NAMM 2023

April 15th, 2023

The 2023 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California was a welcome change of pace, landing in the spring rather than its traditional winter slot. The warmer weather made for an especially enjoyable atmosphere, and it felt like the perfect time of year for audio engineers, music makers, and builders from around the world to come together. It was great reconnecting with Chris Yetter of Audioscape Engineering, Andrew Myburgh of Myburgh Microphones, and Darren and Jessica of Flock Audio. Watching Flock grow from an idea into a full-scale company has been a real pleasure, and seeing their continued momentum on the show floor was inspiring. I also had the chance to catch up with our good friend Eric Strouth of Locomotive Audio and David Marquette from Mercury Audio. I have always loved Dave’s energy, not just in audio but in life, and it is contagious in the best way. I also ran into Jeff Dresser, saxophonist for New Leaf and a fellow reggae enthusiast, and Jamie Bullock from Rhodes Pianos. Jamie is doing great work at Rhodes, and it was fun to talk shop and catch up in person. Another highlight was connecting with Andrew Monheim of Monheim Microphones. We quickly realized we share a long list of mutual friends and made plans to get together at HDP for some Monheim microphone demonstrations in the near future. All in all, NAMM 2023 was a great show and a strong reminder that professional audio, and especially analog recording, is alive and thriving in the United States. The people, the gear, and the shared passion for sound made it a memorable and energizing experience.

August 31st, 2022

Kelsey Margaritta Nothing Strange Album Art.png

Hughes Drive Productions recently had the pleasure of mastering “Nothing Strange,” the new single from Kelsey Margaritta, who also performs under the name Kelsey Auria. While the release appears on streaming platforms under the name Kelsey Margaritta, many listeners may already be familiar with Kelsey through live performances and collaborations billed as Kelsey Auria. Based in the Long Beach area, Kelsey was connected to HDP through word of mouth from longtime friend and HDP recording artist Brandi Alexander, continuing a tradition of trusted, artist-to-artist referrals that often lead to the most rewarding projects. For the mastering of “Nothing Strange,” we used a hybrid chain of analog and digital processors, focusing on clarity, warmth, and emotional translation rather than volume or hype. The goal was to present the song honestly, allowing the performance, lyrics, and musicianship to remain front and center while ensuring the track translates beautifully across systems. While full details about who performed on the track or where it was recorded and mixed are not widely documented, what is immediately clear is the quality of the songwriting and musicianship. “Nothing Strange” is a graceful, well-crafted song with strong lyrics and a natural musical feel that does not rely on excess production to make its point. Kelsey Margaritta, also known as Kelsey Auria, is known for compelling performances and strong ties to the Elliott Smith music community. Kelsey is frequently recognized for expressive interpretations, collaborative work with studios such as New Monkey Studio, and appearances at events connected to that scene, including opening performances in the Los Angeles area. It was a pleasure to help bring “Nothing Strange” across the finish line at HDP. The track stands as a reminder that thoughtful mastering can elevate a song without getting in the way of what already makes it special.

The song was mastered by Reuben Cohen at the Grammy Award winning Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles, whose work added depth, clarity, and impact to the finished release. The single is accompanied by a lyric video that highlights frontman Steve Woods’ powerful words and melody, giving fans a deeper connection to the song and its message. “Songs Unsung” arrives as the Scrap Yard Aces continue to build momentum, marking another step forward for the band as they move into this new chapter of music making.

Where Friendship Meets Reggae: New Leaf’s Album "Feels Like" Belongs to the World

April 17th, 2021

Scotty and Shawn New Leaf.jpg

San Diego roots reggae veterans New Leaf release their full-length album Feels Like, a ten-song collection of original reggae music shaped by long-standing friendships, shared history, and a deep love for the genre. The album features a core lineup of seasoned Southern California musicians, including Scotty Clayton on drums, Danny Primavera on lead vocals and guitar, Jonam LeBlanc on bass, and Adam “Jah Mex” Arredondo on keyboards and organ. An extended cast of horn players rounds out the sound, giving the record its warmth, lift, and classic reggae character. Several tracks on Feels Like feature guest appearances from Phil Simpkin of The Simpkin Project, along with Sergio Sandoval, and additional backing vocals, percussion, and textures performed by me. Saxophone contributions come from Daniel Delacruz, known for his work with Slightly Stoopid, adding another unmistakable Southern California voice to the record. The entire album is recorded and mixed at Hughes Drive Productions, keeping the creative process unified from start to finish. Mastering is handled by Jason “Jocko” Randall, known for his work with John Brown's Body and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, bringing clarity, punch, and cohesion to the final release. Beyond the credits, Feels Like is a record built on time spent together. The sessions were filled with late nights, shared meals, and more than a few sleepovers at the studio. Ideas were welcomed freely, experimentation was encouraged, and the atmosphere stayed open and creative throughout. It was the kind of project where trust allowed the music to grow naturally. For me, this album stands as one of the true highlights of my recording career. Making a record with close friends over an extended period of time, watching songs evolve organically, and capturing that energy in the studio is exactly why Hughes Drive Productions exists. Feels Like is released on limited-edition 180-gram audiophile-grade multicolored vinyl, along with a full range of merchandise for fans who want a tangible piece of this chapter in New Leaf’s story.

New Leaf Open a New Chapter with “Someone Like You” Featuring The Simpkin Project

March 13th, 2020

New Leaf Somone Like You Album Art.png

San Diego–based reggae band New Leaf have released their new single “Someone Like You,” featuring The Simpkin Project, marking the first release from one of Southern California’s most beloved reggae outfits. My connection with New Leaf and frontman Danny Primavera goes way back. We first crossed paths in Redondo Beach in 2008, when Danny was the lead singer of the progressive reggae band International Farmers. The first time I heard that band, I immediately connected with Danny’s voice and energy and hoped that one day I would have the chance to record him and whatever project he was involved in. Life took its turns, the band eventually split up, and Danny moved away for a time. When Danny returned to San Diego, he reconnected with longtime HDP friend, drummer, and On Point Promotions owner Scotty Clayton. Together, they formed what quickly became a true reggae supergroup. The lineup features Scotty Clayton on drums, Danny Primavera on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jonam LeBlanc on bass, Adam “Jah Mex” Arredondo on keys, and a rotating cast of horn players, including the late Don Carter of the popular Stranger Band. Don was a San Diego reggae legend, and his musicianship, spirit, and influence remain deeply woven into the sound and history of this music. It was an honor to have his contribution as part of this project. All tracks for “Someone Like You” were recorded, mixed, and edited at Hughes Drive Productions in Huntington Beach. The song features backing vocals from Phil Simpkin, frontman of The Simpkin Project, along with harmony vocals from me, adding another familiar layer of collaboration to the track. The final master was handled by Jason “Jocko” Randall, who brought the finishing touch to the release. “Someone Like You” sets the tone for what’s coming next from New Leaf. The band is preparing to release the remainder of their new full-length album, Feels Like, which is expected to be pressed on limited-edition multicolored vinyl, giving fans both a sonic and visual keepsake from this new chapter. For me, this release is one of those full-circle moments. A connection made years ago, rediscovered through friendship, collaboration, and a shared love of reggae music, finally finding its way into the studio and onto record.

The Sound of Summer at HDP: Scrap Yard Aces’ “Mota

July 24th, 2018

The Scrap Yard Aces have just released their debut single “Mota,” a vibey, upbeat track that sets the tone for what the band has been building. Bursting with energy and groove, the song blends a bright, punchy horn section with a reggae-influenced backbone, big backing vocals, and an instantly addictive chorus that sticks from the first listen. All of the tracks for “Mota” were recorded at Hughes Drive Productions’ original studio, where the band brought the song to life with a live, organic feel. I played Hammond organ on the track, weaving it into the arrangement to help glue together the horns, rhythm section, and vocals. If you watch the video closely, you might even catch a quick cameo from me along the way. The performance on “Mota” captures the Scrap Yard Aces at their most joyful and infectious, with a groove that feels effortless and a sound that invites you in right away. It is a track that was simply a blast to record, and that spirit comes through loud and clear. The single was mastered by Reuben Cohen of Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles, whose world-class touch gave the final release its punch, clarity, and polish. “Mota” is also set to appear on the Scrap Yard Aces’ upcoming fifth full-length album Sense in This Time, which is expected to be released in early fall 2019, making this single the first taste of a much larger body of work still to come.

Beyond the Smoke: The Simpkin Project Find Stillness in “Meditation

April 20th, 2018

The Simpkin Project release their new single “Meditation” on April 20, 2018, with the music video premiering online earlier this month. The track also appears on the High Society Reggae compilation, which drops alongside the single and places the song within a wider snapshot of modern reggae. “Meditation” is The Simpkin Project’s take on a theme many contemporary reggae bands eventually explore, but with a deliberately different approach. Rather than leaning into the expected clichés, the song focuses on space, feel, and intention, blending traditional reggae foundations with dub textures and modern influences while staying grounded in roots sensibility. The single is released through Dub Rockers, part of the iconic VP Records lineage. The track is commissioned by longtime friend and fellow reggae artist Ted Ganung, who at the time works in A&R for Dub Rockers. “Meditation” also marks the first Simpkin Project single following the release of the band’s fourth studio album, Beam of Light, making it a standalone statement within a compilation release. All recording, mixing, and mastering for “Meditation” take place entirely at Hughes Drive Productions, with the final master handled in-house. Keeping the entire process under one roof allowed the track to maintain a consistent vision from initial tracking through final delivery. The accompanying music video is directed, shot, and edited by Nick Zermino, who at the time serves as The Simpkin Project’s bass player. His visual treatment mirrors the tone of the song, creating a calm but intentional visual companion that reinforces the music’s message. “Meditation” stands as a clear example of how modern reggae continues to evolve, absorbing elements from other genres while staying true to the tradition, spirit, and feel that define the music.

Hitting the Tracks: Scrap Yard Aces’ First EP, Same Train, Now Available

January 30th, 2018

I’m excited to share the release of the Scrap Yard Aces’ debut EP, Same Train. The band, a four-piece of seasoned music veterans from Orange County, recorded an entire full-length album at Hughes Drive Productions, but decided to release three songs first as a preview of what’s coming. All of the tracks and instruments on this EP were recorded at HDP’s original studio, and I handled the mixing as well, working in close collaboration with the band. We spent a lot of time together in the room shaping performances, sounds, and arrangements, really digging in to bring out the best in each track and capture the spirit of the band. On this release I also had the chance to play Hammond organ, adding some extra flavor and energy throughout the songs. One of the highlights is our take on Joe Strummer’s “Get Down Moses,” which was an absolute joy to record. That track in particular brought a raw, electric energy to the sessions and reminded me why making records with musicians like these is so much fun. The title track, “Same Train,” also has a music video, giving fans a visual window into the band’s sound and vibe. The EP artwork was created by Jimmy Ovidia, the same artist behind the Simpkin Project’s Beam of Light cover, giving the release a bold and distinctive visual identity. The EP was mastered by Ben Kanserbaum, our HDP assistant engineer, longtime friend, and trusted audio expert, who added the final polish and depth that ties everything together. Same Train is the first public taste of what the Scrap Yard Aces have been building, showcasing their groove, chemistry, and versatility while setting the stage for the full-length album still to come. The three songs are available now on streaming platforms, with much more on the way.

Converters, Conversations, and Burl Audio: Vintage King Talks Burl with HDP

January 21st, 2017

Hughes Drive Productions recently collaborated with Optic Thunder, a boutique video production company run by longtime friend Nick Zermino, to create a special interview series for Vintage King, filmed on the floor of the NAMM Show. The project came together thanks to our close friend Alex Oana, who brought Nick and HDP along for a NAMM experience we will not soon forget. Over the course of the show, we interviewed dozens of manufacturers and top-tier audio engineers, focusing not only on specific products but also on how they think about music making, creativity, and the studio experience as a whole. Interview participants across the series include Dr. Steve Jackson of Pultec, Chris Lord-Alge, Tom Lord-Alge, Colin Broad of BAE Audio, Jonathan Little of Rupert Neve Designs, Steven Slate, and Peter Reardon of Shadow Hills Industries, among many others. One featured video in the series centers on a conversation with Rich Williams of Burl Audio. We sat down with Rich to dig into Burl’s design philosophy, real-world studio use, and the mindset behind their approach to digital conversion. Hughes Drive Productions handled all audio capture and post-production for the interviews, ensuring the conversations translated clearly and consistently despite the chaos of the show floor. This project also marked HDP’s first deep dive into Burl Audio converters. After hearing them in context and learning more about their philosophy, we can safely say we are fans and are now planning a transition from our current Antelope Audio setup toward a full Burl Mothership system. More on that soon. Creating this content for Vintage King Audio alongside Optic Thunder was a reminder of why we love this industry. It is about people, ideas, and tools that support the creative process. More videos from the series are on the way, so stay tuned.
